Best birthday gift ever!

My employer and I parted ways today. The timing was a bit out of my control, which is mildly irritating (especially since it's two days after my birthday), but it's something that I'd have initiated relatively soon anyway (though not till I had some place else to work).

Please don't anyone be worried (I'm not out on the street, and I've got enough cushion that that's unlikely), but if you know of a position for a Senior Unix/Linux Systems Administrator that you could point out to me, please don't hesitate to do so. Here is fine, as is email.

I am, at present, in the Philadelphia metro area. Given the opportunity, I wouldn't mind staying here (because moving is a hassle), but my ties to the area are primarily emotional (no dependents, no owned/mortgaged real estate), and not all that strong. That means I'm open to seriously considering long-distance and even international geographic changes (this seems like a decent time to clear out of the US anyway). [info]giantlaser, need a Unix guy? ;^>

Update: I should probably point out that my resume lives here.

Was there any kind of reason? It seems strange, especially considering the switchover of emails and all the things that seemed to be going on.

I think i saw some senior unix admin positions around here, but here is Montreal, Canada. Too far?

Not at all too far. C'mon, I only half-jokingly suggested Iraq just now.

But I don't speak French. Ordinarily, that wouldn't much matter, but my current employer was recently bought by a company based in Montreal, and there's been some difficulty conveying technical ideas. All the Montreal folks speak English just fine... for day to day use. But all of their technical terms are in French, and all of ours were in English.

In any case, Canada would be great, and I really am open to just about anything, so feel free.

// also, meant to say: sorry to hear about it.
// at least you were hoping to leave soon.

// to echo the earlier comment, i'm surprised
// that this is happening, given the state of
// things there.

I think they're making a mistake, but it's obviously not my place to tell them so.

you want money with that?

So I have a position over here, in Zurich. But it ain't paid. And it's Debian. Let me know if you want it.

Other than that... sorry to hear. I am sure you'll find something better than working for spammers. :)

Re: you want money with that?

Zurich good, Debian fine, but no-money bumps it pretty far down the list. Let me know when you're back in München.

Did they at least have a better reason than the one I got? My (NT4) workstation's netbios description was misconfigured.

Oh, sure. I'm an asshole, especially to people who are wasting my time. In HR-speak, that's "poor customer service skills" and "not a team player". Not that they exactly created an environment where that was easy, but whatever.

That sounds bitter. I'm not actually angry at any specific people. It didn't work out. Fine. I was well aware that it wasn't working out, and they've just forced my timing a bit. Not really a huge deal, provided I can line up a few interviews soon.

I think that distinction is part of why I'm having such a hard time getting interviews. I just don't get HR folks, and they don't get me.

Thanks!

I'm hoping to fill this week with lining up possibilities and then relax through the severance period (unless I start working, I guess).

It's quite possible I'd need some of that time to relocate, I suppose.

I'm sorry. Happy birthday though, you geezer. You should join the mass exodus to NYC. I'm sure someone needs some kind of UNIX something administered by a grumpy sysadmin somewhere in that mess.

Once upon a time, I was looking at something in Jersey City. I never heard back. But I poked some new feelers out at that earlier today, so we'll see. (I obviously wouldn't live in JC...)

There are, in fact, quite a lot of sysadmin things in NYC, especially as relates to Wall Street.

There are always UNIX positions around here in Boston. Check monster.com, would love to have you in this area.

Not quite up to making recruiter noise yet.

If possible, I prefer not to deal with them, since they take a cut for themselves out of the employer and function larger on things like technical certs (which are meaningful only for them).

There may be a couple of things I should chase down in that area, though, I'll let you know.

Good luck, g.

Will keep my eyes open in Pittsburgh just in case. Sometimes during AFS outages I think CMU CS could use some regime change.

If you find yourself with the desire and opportunity to move, I hope you wind up somewhere cool... the inertia of your stuff notwithstanding. PacNW/Boston/SF/LA/Chicago/NYC/etc. -- is there any city you've ever really wanted to move to?

Chicago, a bit.

Out of the US, though...

Might be about time.

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of work for someone that wants to do Unix. I've got a lab full of Iraqis that want to learn to use Linux, but only a few projects that I need Linux for. Certainly not enough work for a full-time sysadmin.

I'd ask you about working technical sales, but I'm betting that "not a team player" thing would be a problem. ;)

Yeah, my impression was that you needed solid network infrastructure and the 90%-of-users-use-it OS to go along with it, neither of which are exactly my thing.

"Not a team player" wouldn't necessarily affect my ability to do technical sales (I was actually very polite to my company's customers, I just didn't take being treated like a help desk when, in fact, we had a help desk for that purpose, very well), but I don't think I've got the background to be technical about what you're selling.

I'm not all that good at dancing in the mortar rain anyway. ;^>
